About my chosen topic: The Blurring of Non-Profit and For-Profit Art Worlds: Traditionally, for-profit and non-profit arts institutions have operated separately, sometimes with a “church and state” sense of seriousness of the boundary between them. In fact, markets and institutions for art have always interacted. But increasingly, their lines have become blurred. Arts professionals go back and forth between working in galleries and museums. Commercial galleries host “non-selling” exhibitions and issue academic-level catalogues to accompany them. Museum retrospectives and art-fair prizes increase the market value of artists’ work.
