Soil Project description
It is a soil project description for a family farm in Arkansas. GEOG 4305: Soil Evaluation Project, Fall 2018 The paper should be no more than 12 pages including tables and figures, but not including the soil series description appendix. Students will also complete a 5-10-minute presentation on their project. The soil evaluation project will count for 20% of your final class grade. Assignment Instructions: You will write a soil description for a chosen Area of Interest (AOI). Select an AOI with the goal of relating soil characteristics to a particular site feature or land use (e.g. agriculture, housing development, mountain biking, species conservation, Native American settlement, nuclear power generation). The AOI could be a location that you are personally familiar with, such as a family farm, location in your hometown, an area where you like to hike or hunt, or a place where you have participated in research at UCA. (You cannot choose the JMNR as your AOI). Your AOI could be a conservation site that supports a rare habitat or species (Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission Land or Nature Conservancy Land). Feel free to get creative and try to find a site that will be of interest to you and to the rest of the class during your in class presentation. Your AOI must be between 50-5000 acres and include at least three different soil map units including at least five different soil series (this includes both major and minor components within a map unit). If your AOI does not include the required number of map units or soil series then increase the size. Paper Sections Introduction (no more than 2 pages double spaced) Why did you choose this AOI? What are the general landscape characteristics? Include location, climate, land use, geology, landforms and describe the specific site feature or land use that you will relate to the soils.
